Sanibel is a barrier island -- a collection of sand on the leeward (downwind) side of Pine Island, which is made of more solid coral rock. It's known for its bounty of seashells which is a result of the island's location and its east-west orientation. It sits on a large plateau that extends west into the Gulf of Mexico for several miles, creating a shelf for the shells to collect on and eventually wash onto the shore.
