The Keys are an archipelago that extends from the southernmost tip of the Florida peninsula. They're the exposed portions of an ancient coral reef.
Approximately 130,000 years ago the Earth was in an interglacial ("between ice age") phase; the average temperature was warmer and the sea level was about 25 feet higher than it is today. During this period, several parallel lines of reef formed along the edge of the submerged Florida plateau. When the water receded, these reefs became exposed, were partially eroded, and became the islands we know today.
