Drawn to Oahu's beautiful beaches, rich history, and 25-foot surf, more than 5 million people visit the island every year and 75% of Hawaii's resident population call it home.
The island was formed when two large shield volcanoes rose from the sea floor and intersected. During a period of higher sea levels a few hundred thousand years ago, a coral reef formed where Honolulu is today. When the waters receded, they left behind a sturdy platform upon which the city now stands (source).
