Serving as shelter for oceangoing vessels from the notoriously-rough Alaskan seas, the US portion of the Inside Passage encompasses approximately 1,000 islands and 15,000 miles of shoreline. It's frequented by tankers, tow-boats, cruise ships, fishing trawlers, and several ferry vessels who all carefully navigate the area's extreme tides, which can vary by as much as 30 feet between their high- and low-points.
